Bundan tam 14 yıl önce tanıştım Rage Against the Machine ya da bilinen adları “Rage” veya “RATM” ile. Bir gün “Eski Kemancı” adlı Taksim’in en eski rock barlarından biri olan bu barda duydum “Killing In The Name Of” adlı şarkılarını. Bilemezdim ki bana bu şarkının, her dinlediğimde yıllarca bitmeyen bir haz ve coşku ile kulaklarımı dolduracağını. O yıllarda bu şarkı tüm mekanlarda çalmış, insanları doruk noktasına çıkarmak ve coşturmak için DJ’lerin en büyük silahı haline gelmişti. Ben de birçok kez alkol duvarını zorladıktan sonra, bu şarkı ile zıvanadan çıkmışımdır Tabii ki 30′lu yaşlara geldikten sonra aynı coşkuyu taşımak pek söz konusu olmuyor. Ama hala yerinde durarak bu şarkıyı dinlemek pek mümkün değil. Öyle  bir müzik işte Rage’in yaptığı…

1990 yılında California, ABD’de kurulmuş Rage Against The Machine. Zack de la Rocha grubun vokalistliğini üstlenmiş ve ona gitarlarda Tom Morello, davulda Brad Wilk ve baslarda Tim Commerford  eşlik etmektedir. Rage Against the Machine 90`ların başarılı gruplarından olsa da 2000 yılının sonlarına doğru Zack de la Rocha`nın gruptan ayrılmasıyla darmaduman oldu. Nu metal akımına fena etki eden Rage, ayrıca radikal sol görüşleriyle de kitleleri peşinden sürüklemiştir. Albüm kapaklarında, şarkı sözlerinde ve birçok söyleşide de, radikal sol görüşlerini ifade etmeye çalışmışlardır. Politik gösterilerde en önce yer almayı çok severler.

Aslında Rage Against the Machine, Zack de la Rocha`nın önceki grubu Inside Out`un bir şarkısının adıdır. Grubun adı buradan gelmektedir ve Kapitalizme karşı olan öfkelerini simgeler. Bu anlamda grup kendi ile çelişkiye girmiş `in Sony`e ait Epic Records`la anlaşması hayran kitlesi tarafından büyük tepki görmüştü. Grup, adı ile aynı adı taşıyan ilk albümleri olan “Rage Against the Machine”ı 1992 yılında çıkartmış ve bu albümdeki “Killing In The Name Of” adlı şarkı ile en büyük başarıyı yakalamıştır. Ardından 1996′da “Evil Empire”ı çıkarttılar. Bu albüm de son derece beğenilmiş; fakat ilk albümün başarısına ulaşamadığı eleştirilerine halen maruz kalmaktadır. “Evil Empire” albümünün popüler parçaları ise “People of the Sun” ve “Bulls on Parade”dır. Peşinden 1999 yılında çıkan “The Battle Of Los Angeles” ile  diğer albümlerinde yakaladıkları başarıyı perçinlediler. Guerilla Radio da bu albümün öne çıkan parçası diyebiliriz.

Hepimizin çok iyi bildiği o meşhur Matrix filminin sonunda çalan “Wake Up” adlı parça da Rage`a aittir. Bu parçayla birlikte Rage dünya çapında da kendi hayran kitlesi dışında  iyice tanınmıştır. Devam filmi olan Matrix Reloaded`da çalan diğer parçaları ise “Calm Like A Bomb”dur. 2000 yılında çıkan “Renegades” albümlerinde, Devo ve Cypress Hill gibi grupların şarkılarını cover yaptılar. Cypress Hill parçası “How I Could Just Kill A Man” adlı parça da bu albümde yer alır. Albümün piyasaya çıkış tarihine yakın, grubun vokalisti olan Zack de la Rocha gruptan ayrılmıştır. Gerekçe olarak ise, “karar alma mekanizmalarının tamamen çöktüğünü, politik ve sanatsal farklılıkların ortaya çıkmaya başladığını” ifade etmiştir. Daha sonra eski Soundgarden üyesi ve gitaristi Chris Cornell,  geriye kalan Rage elemanlarıyla birlikte Audioslave`i kurup, Audioslave ve Out of Exile adlı iki albüm yapmışlardır. Hemen ardından gruptan ayrılan Zack de la Rocha ise DJ Shadow`la birlikte, Irak Savaşı`nı protesto eden  “March of Death” adlı bir şarkı da yapmıştır. Son olarak Eylül 2004`te “We Want It All” adında bir parça daha piyasaya çıktı. Ve gerisi gelmedi…
