Gerçek adı James Jewell Osterberg olan “Punk’ın Büyükbabası” Iggy Pop, 21 Nisan 1947’de Amerika – Michigan dünyaya geldi. James boş vakitlerinde, 1964 yılında katıldığı “Iguanas” adlı yerel bir rock grubunda davul çalıyordu. Hemen ardından Iguanas, bir Bo Diddley cover’ı olan “Mona”yı çıkarttı.  Aradan geçen uzun yıllar ve başarısızlıklarla dolu olan müzik kariyerinden sonra James  “Instinct” adlı albüm çıktı. Sex Pistols’ın gitaristi Steve Jones albümde lead gitar çaldı. “Instinct”in prodüktörü ise Bill Laswell’di.

1990 Sonrası: Iggy, şarkı söylemeye, filmlerde rol almaya ve kitleleri şaşırtmaya devam etti. 1990’lı yılların sonları Stooge’un kurucusunun şöhretinin ve başarısının yeniden doğuşuna şahit oldu. Iggy’nin, daha sonra “Trainspotting” romanının film olcağı İskoçyalı yazar Irvine Welsh’in bir çok eserinde adı geçmeye başladı. Iggy “Trainspotting” filmi için “Lust For Life”ı tekrar kaydetti ve parça için bir de klip çekildi. Iggy, en büyük rolünü ise 1996 yılında vizyona giren film “The Crow II: City Of Angels” da sergiledi. Virgin Plak Şirketi, Iggy’nin yapıtlarının bir toplaması olan “Nude and Rude: The Best Of Iggy Pop”u piyasaya çıkardı. 1998 yılında “We Will Fall: The Iggy Pop Tribute” piyasaya çıktı.

Daha sonra, Iggy’nin kendi remixlediği parçası “Raw power” piyasaya çıktı. VH1 Müzik Kanalı “Behind The Music” programı için Iggy’nin hayatının anlatıldığı bir bölüm hazırladı. Ve sanatçının 13. Stüdyo çalışması “Avenue B” 1999 Mart’ında piyasaya çıktı.

Grubun aslında en bilindik parçası 90′lara damgasını vuran ve hala birçok radio kanalı ve rock barda çalınan “The Passenger” oldu.
